Arlis Perry, a 19-year-old newlywed, was found brutally murdered inside Stanford Memorial Church in the early hours of October 13, 1974. Her body was discovered behind the altar in a ritualistic arrangement that baffled investigators for more than four decades. The case went cold until a DNA breakthrough in 2018 led police to a suspect who had been hiding in plain sight the entire time.

The night she disappeared

Arlis Perry arrived at Stanford University in September 1974 with her husband Bruce, who had enrolled as a pre-med student. The couple had married just weeks earlier in their home state of North Dakota and were starting their new life together in California.

On the evening of October 12, Arlis and Bruce had a minor argument in their apartment. Around 11:30 p.m., Arlis told Bruce she needed some air and was going to walk to Stanford Memorial Church to pray and clear her head. Bruce stayed behind. It was the last time he would see his wife alive.

When Arlis hadn’t returned by 3:00 a.m., Bruce contacted campus security. A security guard named Steve Crawford was dispatched to check the church, which should have been locked hours earlier.

The discovery

Steve Crawford unlocked the church and began searching the darkened interior. Behind the altar, he found Arlis Perry’s body.

She had been killed in what appeared to be a sexually motivated attack with ritualistic elements. An ice pick had been driven through her skull behind her left ear. Another ice pick had been placed in a manner suggesting deliberate staging. Her clothing had been partially removed and rearranged. Candles from the altar had been positioned near her body.

The savagery and staging shocked even veteran homicide detectives. The setting, a sacred space on a prestigious university campus, amplified the horror.

The investigation stalls

Santa Clara County Sheriff’s detectives interviewed hundreds of people. They looked closely at Bruce Perry, as spouses are always initial persons of interest, but he was quickly cleared. His grief was genuine, and he had no motive.

Investigators explored theories involving occult activity, given the ritualistic staging of the crime scene. They pursued leads involving transient individuals seen near campus that night. They retraced Arlis’s final steps, canvassed the area, and built a file thick with tips and dead ends.

Despite exhaustive work, no arrest was made. The murder weapons couldn’t be traced. No witnesses came forward who had seen Arlis enter the church or encountered anyone suspicious leaving. The case went cold.

Bruce Perry eventually moved away, carrying the weight of unanswered questions for the rest of his life. He died in 2013, never knowing who killed his wife.

Decades of silence

For more than 40 years, the Arlis Perry case remained one of the most haunting unsolved murders in California. It was revisited periodically by cold case detectives, but leads evaporated.

Then, in the mid-2010s, advances in DNA technology offered new hope. The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit, led by Detective Sergeant Dan Bustos, reopened the case with fresh eyes and new tools.

Investigators submitted biological evidence collected from the 1974 crime scene for advanced DNA testing and genealogical analysis. The process was painstaking, but it yielded a profile.

The breakthrough

In the summer of 2018, detectives identified a suspect: Stephen Blake Crawford. The name sent shockwaves through the investigative team.

Crawford was the security guard who had discovered Arlis Perry’s body in 1974. He had been interviewed during the initial investigation and had worked at Stanford for years afterward. He had never been a primary suspect. He had been, in the eyes of investigators at the time, a witness.

DNA evidence now pointed directly to him. Detectives moved quickly to make an arrest.

On June 28, 2018, investigators prepared to confront Crawford at his San Jose apartment. As they approached, Crawford retreated inside and took his own life with a gunshot. He died before he could be taken into custody or questioned.

Answers and lingering questions

The DNA evidence left little doubt. Stephen Crawford had murdered Arlis Perry inside Stanford Memorial Church on October 12, 1974, then staged the crime scene and positioned himself as the person who found her body.

Investigators believe Crawford may have been inside the church when Arlis entered, or followed her inside shortly afterward. He had access, keys, and knowledge of the building. His role as a security guard gave him cover and control.

The ritualistic staging may have been intended to mislead investigators or fulfill some personal compulsion. Crawford took those answers with him.

Sheriff Laurie Smith held a press conference confirming the resolution of the case. She acknowledged the bitterness of the outcome. Justice had been delayed by more than four decades, and the suspect was dead.

Arlis Perry’s family, after 44 years, finally had a name. Bruce Perry, who had spent his life wondering, had died five years too soon to learn the truth.

The shadow of the church

The Arlis Perry case remains a defining example of both the limitations and possibilities of cold case investigations. For decades, the killer walked free, hiding behind the very role that gave him access to his victim.

Advances in forensic genealogy and DNA testing ultimately solved what seemed unsolvable. The resolution brought closure, but not comfort. Arlis Perry was 19 years old, newly married, and full of promise. She walked into a church seeking peace and was murdered by a man sworn to protect the campus.

Her story is a reminder that some cases never truly close. They wait, silent and patient, until science and persistence catch up to the truth.
